The Hobbit
by J.R.R. Tolkien
Characterization Paragraph & Illustration
- Extra Credit Assignment -
This is just an EXAMPLE of how to structure your characterization paragraph. You must write in complete sentences, use MLA format, and include a thesis statement and three quotes. The commentary and leads in this paragraph are weak, but this example is to help you with structure rather than format.
You must also include the illustration with your paragraph. Both are due no later than Monday, November 20th.
Example Paragraph (do not use these quotes or sentences):
In the novel The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkein, Thorin Oakenshield is the most important dwarf of them all because he shows the best leadership, but he can be intimidating and greedy at times. For example, when he is first introduced in the novel, “Thorin is an enormously important dwarf, in fact no other than the great Thorin Oakenshield” (Tolkien 8). This shows that from the very beginning Bilbo and the other dwarfs see Thorin as their leader. Even though he is a natural leader, Thorin has greedy moments when he says, “‘That stone was my father’s, and is mine,’ he said. ‘Why should I purchase my own?’” (258). He is used to getting what he wants even if others think him greedy. In addition to greediness, Thorin is also intimidating to the other members of his journey. He announces, “We shall soon before the break of day start on our long journey, a journey from which some of us…may never return” (15-16). He is not afraid of death and this is intimidating to others who are scared. Although Thorin has many characteristics, his natural leadership overrules his greediness and intimidation.
